วันอาสาฬหบูชา ตรงกับวันเพ็ญ เดือน 8 ก่อนวันเข้าพรรษา 1 วัน เป็นวันที่พุทธศาสนิกชนแสดงความเคารพต่อพระสงฆ์ อาสาฬหเป็นชื่อเดือน ๘ อาสาฬหบูชาย่อมาจากคำว่าอาสาฬหบูรณ มีบูชา แปลว่า การบูชาพระในวันเพ็ญเดือน 8 ถ้าปีใดมีเดือน 8 สองครั้ง
ก็จะ เลื่อนไปเป็นวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำเดือน 8

เหตุการณ์ที่สำคัญ ได้แก่

1.? เป็นวันที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงแสดงปฐมเทศนา คือ แสดงพระธรรมเป็นครั้งแรก มีชื่อว่า ธัมมจักกัปปวัตตนสูตร ซึ่งมีใจความสำคัญกล่าวถึง อริยสัจ 4

2.? เป็นวันที่พระสังฆรัตนะ เกิดขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกในโลก

3. เป็นวันที่พระรัตนตรัย คือ พระพุทธ พระธรรม พระสงฆ์ ครบทั้ง 3 ดวง

สมเด็จพระพุทธองค์ ได้ตรัสรู้ในวันเพ็ญ เดือน 6 แล้ว ได้ทรงใช้เวลาทบทวนสัจธรรมและทรงคำนึงว่าธรรมะที่พระองค์ตรัสรู้นี้ลึกซึ้งมาก ยากที่ผู้อื่นจะรู้ตาม แต่อาศัยพระกรุณานี้เป็นที่ตั้ง จึงทรงพิจารณาแบ่งบุคคลออกเป็น 4 ประเภท(บัว 4 เหล่า) คือ
1. อุคฆฏิตัญญู ดอกบัวที่อยู่พ้นน้ำ
2. วิปัจจิตัญญู ดอกบัวที่อยู่ปริ่มน้ำ
3. เนยยะ ดอกบัวที่อยู่ใต้น้ำ
4. ปทปรมะ ดอกบัวที่จมอยู่กับโคลนตม
จึงทรงมีพระกรุณาธิคุณ ระลึกอาฬารดาบสและอุททกดาบสว่า มีกิเลสเบาบางสามารถตรัสรู้ได้ทันที แต่ท่านทั้ง 2 ได้ตายแล้ว จึงทรงระลึกถึงปัญจวัคคีย์ ได้ทรงแสดงพระธรรมเทศนาแก่ปัญจวัคคีย์ ทั้ง 5 คือ โกณฑัญญะ วัปปะ ภัททิยะ มหานามะ และอัสชิ ซึ่งล้วนแล้วแต่ เป็นผู้อุปฐากพระพุทธเจ้าเมื่อครั้งยังทรงบำเพ็ญทุกข์กิริยาอยู่ พระธรรมที่ พระพุทธองค์ทรงเทศนาในครั้งนี้มี ชื่อ ธรรมจักกัปปวัตนสูตร ซึ่งมี อริยสัจ 4 หรือความจริงอันประเสริฐ 4 ประการได้แก่

1. ทุกข์ ความไม่สบายกาย ไม่สบายใจ
2. สมุทัย เหตุให้เกิดทุกข์
3. นิโรธ ความดับทุกข์
4. มรรค ข้อปฎิบัติให้ถึงความดับทุกข์

และหลังจากแสดงพระธรรมเทศนาแล้ว ท่านโกณฑัญญะได้ดวงตาเห็นธรรม เป็นคนแรก ได้กราบฑูลขอบวชและพระพุทธองค์ก็ทรงอนุญาต โดยทรงทำการอุปสมบทให้แบบ เอหิภิกขุอุปสัมปทา นับเป็น”ปฐมสาวก” ของพระพุทธเจ้า

ดังนั้นในวันนี้จึงเป็นวันแรกที่มี พระรัตนตรัยครบองค์สาม คือ พระพุทธ พระธรรม และพระสงฆ์ เนื่องจากพระพุทธองค์ทรงเทศนาเป็นกัณฑ์แรก จึงเรียกเทศฯกัณฑ์นี้ว่า “ปฐมเทศนา” หรืออีกนัยหนึ่งอาจจะกล่าวได้ว่านับเป็นวันแรก ที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงประกาศพระพุทธศาสนา
